Marlborough is pleased to present a group ehxibition featuring works by Duggie Fields, Jeff Keen, Allen Jones and H.C. Westermann.

This exhibition brings together a multi-generational cohort of British and American artists who share both direct influence and more oblique sensibilities. In particular, the group takes an off-kilter and humanized approach to the typically cool remove of Pop, adding a deeper layer of psychological terrain. Desire, despair, and elation inform these works in equal measure marking a distinction from other artists in this milieu while retaining all of the graphic punch and dynamism.

Westermann and Jones were friends and inspired one another over the years finding affinities in their respective fixations despite a divergence of approach. Keen, born within a year of Westermann and known for his influential film works and countercultural gravitas, shares with his American counterpart a similar feel for the impact of war and violence. He utilizes a similar stylistic approach of collage and raw cartoonish imagery with his works on paper. The youngest of the group, Fields brings this energy forward into the context of an 1980s aesthetic while keeping a steady eye on art history from classical sculpture to Modernism.

Together, the works establish a snapshot of international Pop, both from its established center and it’s richly seeded margins. This provides a glimpse into a broader context and complexity for this generation, and establishes an alternative artistic vein and makes a case for its ongoing impact.
