Representational Painting NOW panel featuring Jason Brooks

Representational Painting NOW will explore, dissect and contest key ideas surrounding contemporary representational painting. The topics for discussion will include the relevance and popularity of the form, the suggestion that it is in fact more of a technical skill or craft than an art form and, the role of digital technology as something that might both extend/amplify as well as invalidate representational painting.

The discussion will be chaired by Laura Gascoigne, art critic, columnist for The Jackdaw, contributor to The Tablet and regular reviewer for The Spectator and Apollo.

Panellists include:

Jason Brooks, who explores how the language of painting can focus on one art object and, via a journey of exploration, turn it into another. His current exhibition on view at Marlborough shows the transformation of different sources of art, including hobbyist landscape paintings, 18th century romantic paintings, devotional imagery and composited images taken by Brooks of fellow image makers. Brooks is interested in developing a meta language of painting, where a drip is not just a drip, and the subject is not the subject.

Anna McNeil, Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize exhibitor 2017 and recently profiled in Aesthetica Magazine.

Daphne Todd OBE, first female President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, winner of the BP Portrait Award 2010 and one of the Selectors for this year's Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize.
